Curious about bookkeeping or BAS services?

Here are answers to some common questions from  business owners:

What is a BAS Agent?

A BAS agent is a registered professional who helps businesses meet their Business Activity Statement (BAS) obligations. Registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB), BAS agents are authorised to prepare and lodge BAS and related statements, including GST, PAYG withholding, PAYG instalments, superannuation, and fuel tax credits. They can also communicate with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) on behalf of clients and offer guidance on BAS-related compliance and record-keeping. Unlike tax agents, who provide a full range of tax services, BAS agents are limited to BAS-specific work. To become a BAS agent, individuals must meet certain educational, experience, and ethical standards set by the TPB. Their services are especially valuable to small and medium-sized businesses that want professional help staying compliant with ATO reporting requirements.

What does a bookkeeper do?

Bookkeepers are responsible for recording and managing the day-to-day financial transactions of a business. Their main tasks include tracking income and expenses, reconciling bank accounts, managing accounts payable and receivable, processing payroll, and maintaining accurate financial records using accounting software like MYOB and Xero.

What is the difference between a bookkeeper and a BAS Agent?

A bookkeeper handles the daily financial transactions of a business, such as recording income and expenses, managing payroll, and reconciling accounts, but they cannot legally lodge BAS or give BAS-related advice unless registered. A BAS agent is a qualified and registered professional with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) who can legally prepare and lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS) and deal with the ATO on matters like GST, PAYG, and superannuation. Essentially, all BAS agents can do bookkeeping, but not all bookkeepers are authorised to act as BAS agents.
